Favela means “ghetto” or “shanty town” in Brazil. These were African neighborhoods in the late 19th century after the fall of slavery. The blacks within these towns had no work or land ownership and therefore built their homes on government land. Over time, these neighborhoods grew into vast sizes. Most favelas though, appeared in the 1970’s when people left the rural areas of Brazil to populate the cities in search of work. Many did not find work and ended up within the favelas, making them even larger. Many great people have come from favelas, such as the famous football palyer Ronaldo.
